This year the Jodo Shinshu Correspondence Course (JSCC) Summer Workshop was held on August 9 & 10 at the Jodo Shinshu Center in Berkeley. Students came from Brazil, Alaska, Texas, Minnesota as well as the Midwest and local areas. Participating students enjoyed a variety of activities including informative lectures, casual group discussions on course topics, introduction to home chanting and a wrist-nenju workshop as the evening activity. Special Guest Speaker, Dr. Lori Meeks of the University of Southern California and distinguished author gave an insightful and inspirational lecture entitled “Neither Nun nor Laywoman?: Buddhist Renunciation and the Female Lifecycle in Premodern Japan.” Dr. Meeks focused on the role of women in Buddhism in the Heian and Kamakura periods revealing a major change in religious practice during these eras.

Rev. Harry Bridge (BCA) was present to deliver an informative lecture on Jodo Shinshu terminology, Amida Buddha and the Pure Land and explained that because there have been different interpretations of these subjects throughout history, it is important to keep an open mind when studying them. Rev. Dr. Mary David formerly of the Hawaiian Mission delivered a heartfelt Dharma message at the Sunday Service and called on everyone to be kind, to be peaceful and to be giving to one’s Sangha. Workshop meals were graciously prepared by Judy Kono of the CBE, Michael Endo of the BCA and the hard-working, dedicated volunteers of the JSC. The JSCC Summer Workshop, also known as the August Workshop, is a wonderful time for students to gather together to share their experiences and meet with the Instructors for a more meaningful understanding of their Jodo Shinshu studies.

The JSCC offers new spring and fall enrollments every year and welcomes newcomers to sign up if interested. Contact the JSCC Office at 510-809-1441 or email hongwanjioffice@bcahq.org.
