On August 7 and 8, eighteen students attended the Workshop. One student traveled all the way from Brazil, four came from Hawaii, two from Canada, and others came from Oregon and local areas. Special lecturers were Rev. Sonam Bhutia of Nepal (Kathmandu Hongwanji) who delivered a passionate talk entitled, “From Tibetan Buddhism to Jodo Shinshu.” Prof. Carl Bielefeldt of Stanford University lectured on “Zen and Pure Land Buddhism” and Rev. Katsuya Kusunoki (BCA ) gave wonderful instruction on Jodo Shinshu chanting and etiquette. Another highlight of the program was Lama Pema Tenzin who discussed the power of mandalas such as the healing mandala and engaged the students in creating their own. Other activities were Q&A on Course Topics attended by Rev. Mary David (Hawaii), Rev. Harry Bridge (BCA), Bishop Kodo Umezu and Rev. Kiyonobu Kuwahara. At the Closing Service five students who graduated the Course received their Course Completion Certificates: Neil McGuffin, George Thow, Edythe Vassall, Jim Bickel and Cynthia Wong. One student commented on the program: “I really had a good time meeting and discussing experiences with others. The Q&A session with Dr. Matsumoto and Rev. Bridge was great. I am amazed at the depth and breadth of their knowledge. The lesson on chanting etiquette was valuable. Enjoyed Rev. Sonam’s talk.”
